KC-130 Hercules Carrier Trials on USS Forrestal - October/November, 1963
Tests with a KC-130 in 1963 demonstrated the viability of launching/landing a C-130 on the deck of aircraft carriers - without a tailhook or catapult assist. The C-130 was proposed as a “Super Carrier Onboard Delivery” (Super-COD), able to deliver equipment like spare jet engines that the current C-1 Trader could not carry. While the tests were a wild success, Hercules operations would have involved removing most of the other aircraft from the carrier deck - something no captain would endorse.
The KC-130 used in the tests went on to serve until retired in 2005. The larger C-2 Greyhound COD aircraft went on to enter Navy service in 1966.
